Justice Abbi Silver

Justice Abbi Silver (Ret.)

BIOGRAPHY

Abbi Silver is a former Justice of the Nevada Supreme Court having served as a member of the judiciary for almost 20 years. Justice Silver is unique in that she currently presides as a Senior Justice with the Nevada Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, and the District Courts of Nevada on a regular basis. She began her judicial career in 2003 when she was elected to the Las Vegas Municipal Court. Three years later she was elected to the Las Vegas Justice Court and in 2008 she was elected as a district court judge in the Eighth Judicial District Court. Then in 2014, the citizens of Nevada approved an amendment to Article 6 of the Nevada Constitution which created the Nevada Court of Appeals. Justice Silver was one of three judges appointed by Governor Brian Sandoval to the Inaugural Court of Appeals and then later elected to the seat in 2016. In January 2017, she was sworn in by Governor Sandoval as the first female Chief Judge of the Nevada Court of Appeals. In 2018, Justice Silver was elected to the Nevada Supreme Court unopposed, later serving as the Chief Presiding Justice for the Northern Nevada Panel of the Supreme Court. Justice Silver retired from public service in October of 2022 so she could focus on developing a private ADR practice with a focus on complex cases at ARM as a mediator, arbitrator, special master, appellate consultant, and private judge.

Before her appointment to the Appellate Court, Justice Silver conducted hundreds of trials and settlement conferences and she continues to do so as a Senior Justice. As an Eighth Judicial District Court judge, she presided over all types of complex litigation including but not limited to contract disputes, business disputes, commercial litigation, construction defect cases, personal injury cases, medical malpractice cases. She also presided over one of the highest-profile trials in Nevada: a products liability case involving the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada which resulted in one of the highest verdicts in the history of the state.

Prior to her work on the bench, she worked as a deputy district attorney in Clark County and served as chief deputy over the special victims unit, where she tried more than one hundred jury trials including capital murder, sexual assault, child abuse, domestic violence, and stalking cases. Some of the famous defendants she prosecuted included John Wayne Bobbitt and Floyd Mayweather, as well as the stalkers of major political figures, including former U.S. Senators Harry Reid and John Ensign as well as entertainer Jerry Lewis and Steve and Elaine Wynn.

Justice Silver’s dedication and hard work has won her recognition throughout the legal community and as such she is respected by both sides of the bar. She has received numerous awards and accolades throughout the years in addition to breaking the proverbial “glass ceiling” along the way. Colleagues have described her as hard working, tenacious and passionate. She is eager to channel that enthusiasm into every case that comes before her as a neutral. Justice Silver’s diverse background and extensive trial experience both as a prosecutor and a jurist at all levels makes her uniquely qualified to handle complex and challenging cases in almost any area of civil litigation.
