Justice Nancy Becker (Ret.)

BIOGRAPHY

Nancy A. Becker is a former justice of the Nevada Supreme Court. She served as a member of the judiciary for over twenty years including terms as Chief Justice of the Nevada Supreme Court and Chief Judge of the Eighth Judicial District Court.

Justice Becker began her legal career in 1979 as a corporate and business attorney with a small firm in Washington, D.C. She was also employed as a consultant by the District of Columbia Office on Aging to draft legislation on regulation of long-term nursing facilities and the rights of senior disabled citizens. She returned to her native Nevada in 1983 as a prosecutor with the Las Vegas City Attorney’s Office.

In 1987, Justice Becker embarked on a full-time judicial career when she was elected to the Las Vegas Municipal Court. During her tenure, she helped develop programs to permit judges to suspend sentences and order treatment for individuals with drug, alcohol or mental health issues. Two years later, she served as District Court trial judge in the Eighth Judicial District Court, where she handled civil actions from $7,500 to 3.2 billion dollars, including probate matters, felony criminal trials, administrative agency petitions for review and family law actions.

Justice Becker rounded out her judicial service with her appointment as a Justice of the Supreme Court and was one of seven appellate judges in state court of final appeals handling approximately 2,300 cases per year. It was in 2007 when she left the judiciary to serve as a Chief Deputy District Attorney in Clark County. She returned to the judiciary in 2012 as a Senior Judge after retiring from full-time public service. In this capacity she conducts settlement conferences and hears civil, criminal and family calendars on an “as needed” basis. Justice Becker is also available as a Neutral and Appellate Consultant. Justice Becker is known for her plain speaking, down to earth method of conflict resolution. “She takes the time to know the case and is great with the clients – warm but no nonsense.”
